Blueprint Living Lab

Working Together for Improved Ocean Observations

How do we collaborate for a better understanding of life in the ocean? How do we enable and facilitate communication at different scales and across sectors?

The Blueprint Living Lab is a collaborative platform designed to develop a guiding tool: the Blueprint for Integrated Ocean Science. This innovative product will be co-created with the global ocean observing community, focusing on marine life. The aim is to foster a more holistic and collaborative approach to ocean observations.

Development will take place through a co-creative process inviting the global community, especially those interested in biology and ecosystem ocean observation. Contributions can be made via, for example, surveys, workshops and tests of the Blueprint.

What is the Blueprint?

The Blueprint is currently under development and will be launched in late 2027 on a digital platform that is both interactive and equipped with downloadable resources for practical implementation.

The Blueprint aims to be a guiding tool, posing questions to enable, support, and facilitate thinking and communication across sectors and stakeholders. These guiding questions will be comprehensive to ensure applicability across environments, biology and ecosystem essential ocean variables (EOVs), sectors, and stakeholders. Many questions will be complex, requiring input from various stakeholders, thus encouraging collaboration.

Participate in the development of the Blueprint

There will be many different ways to contribute to the Blueprint's development. BioEcoOcean will organize in-person, online and hybrid workshops. Additionally, various surveys will ensure contributions from across marine environments, sectors, nations, and cultures.

This collaborative and iterative process will enable a Blueprint that can guide an integrated, transparent, responsive and fit-for-need observing system. The BioEcoOcean focal living labs will play a significant role in the Blueprint's development and testing. If your organization is interested in testing early versions of the Blueprint, please contact us to discuss the possibilities. The latest version of the Blueprint will always be available for review and feedback. The first draft is expected by early 2025.

Provide feedback on an initial version of the Blueprint

We encourage you to participate in this co-creative process by filling out Feedback Form v.1: Towards a Blueprint for Integrated Ocean Science. This takes about 5-10 minutes and is the first feedback form in the Blueprint development. Your input is therefore very important.
