Artur Palacz and Aleksandra Cherkasheva (IO PAN) Present Arctic Ocean Research at ESA Living Planet Symposium 2025

Artur Palacz and Aleksandra Cherkasheva from the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IO PAN) recently took part in the European Space Agency's Living Planet Symposium 2025 (LPS25) in Vienna — one of the largest Earth observation conferences in the world.

During the event, the team showcased the Arctic component of the Marine Organic Carbon Atlas developed under the BioEcoOcean project, and in close collaboration with the SEA-Quester project. Their presentation highlighted the current work by IO PAN and partners to improve or develop new in situ and satellite data products for the Arctic, including primary and net community production, phytoplankton pigments and functional types, and chlorophyll. Much focus was given to the Greenland Sea Primary Production Algorithm (Cherkasheva et al., 2025) and the process of co-designing key biogenic data products to advance ocean carbon sequestration modelling in the Arctic. These innovations promise a new level of insight into the Arctic's marine ecosystem dynamics and climate change in the near future.

The symposium also provided an opportunity to engage with other cutting-edge research efforts, in particular those focused on measuring ocean carbon from space.   BioEcoOcean also participated in a special networking session focused on enhancing collaboration between ESA and European Commission ocean science projects, further strengthening our project's visibility and partnerships within the Earth observation community.

The IO PAN team returns from LPS25 energized by new ideas and collaborations, looking forward to future developments in Earth Observations in the Arctic and beyond.
