BioEcoOcean at ICYMARE 2025 in Bremerhaven

This week, a team from Uppsala University joined the International Conference for Young Marine Researchers (ICYMARE). The conference offers an inspiring space for connection, exchange, and collaboration among the next generation of ocean leaders. And we certainly kept ourselves busy!

  • Our PhD student, Valentina Montesano presented her Master’s research titled “Social Dimensions and Marine Conservation: Insights from a Japanese Case Study.” She explored how different social actors in Japan perceive and relate to the marine environment, and what this means for biodiversity conservation strategies.
  • Together, our team also hosted a workshop called “Advancing Ocean Observations of Marine Life through Collaboration and Integration”. This work contributes to the ongoing development of the Blueprint for Integrated Ocean Science, an important support tool for the future of ocean observing. The workshop was hosted by Lina Mtwana Nordlund,  project coordinator and Said Hashim, PostDoc within BioEcoOcean.
  • On top of this, Nina Lepola also interviewed participants for an upcoming episode for the BioEcoOcean podcast miniseries. In this episode, early-career researchers share their views on ocean science and their role in shaping its future. Stay tuned!

ICYMARE is a unique platform that empowers early-career marine scientists to connect, exchange, and build the science of tomorrow. Their ideas, energy, and collaborative spirit are essential to advancing sustainable and inclusive ocean research.
